2001- 2003.  Associate Dean, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Alfred University

 

Teaching Experience:

1986 - present.  Assistant, then associate professor, Physics Department, Alfred University, Alfred NY..  Currently director of the Stull Observatory.

Promotion to Full Professor effective 9/04

 

 Research Experience:

1989 - present.  NSF funded project studying the H alpha solar flare at high time resolutions, using video and video capture technology.  Supervising several undergraduate students in this project.  Research is being conducted using a telescope at the Stull Observatory, Alfred University.

 

1988 - present.  project with Brian Dennis at Goddard Spaceflight Center, investigating the relationships between the hard and soft x-ray signatures of solar flares.  Spent summer of 1988 at Goddard as part of the NASA/ASEE Summer Faculty Fellowship Program.

"Hard X-rays and H-alpha in Solar Flares:  A Correlation",  1992.  with students D. Perry and J.C. Krueger.  Poster paper given at the Spring 1992 meeting of the Astronomical Society of New York, Cornell U.  to appear in Astronomy in New York State.

 

"Studying Solar Flares at a Small College Observatory", 1991.  with student J. C. Krueger.  paper given at 21st meeting of the Solar Physics Division of the American Astronomical Society.  title appears in Bulletin of the American Astronomical Society, 23, p 1067.

 

Recent Funding:

Oishei Foundation grant for using astronomy education as a bridge to high school students in Buffalo City Schools.  Goal is to attract more urban students to STEM fields and to college. ($350,000 over 3 years)

 

Alden Foundation grant for automated telescope allowing remote access to telescope on Alfred University campus.  Telescope used in Oishei grant above plus Snow Foundation grant below.  ($100,000 in FY 2004)

 

ICFNY Snow Memorial grant to duplicate Oishei project but for a rural school district (Wellsville, NY).  $12,500.

 

Manley Family Trust grant for equipment in support of Oishei and Snow projects.  $15,000
